Teacher Spotlight: Meet our Passionate Music Teacher

At GAA, we are fortunate to have educators who bring not only expertise but also a deep passion for their subjects. This month, our Teacher Spotlight shines on our talented music teacher, whose journey into teaching was fueled by a personal mission: to ensure every student has access to the musical education he never had growing up in Ecuador.

A Personal Mission to Teach Music

In Ecuador, music education was not part of the standard curriculum. When he entered college to study music, he was surprised to realize how much he had to learn—music theory, reading, and technique were all new to him. This experience sparked a passion: "How is it possible that so many students grow up without a music education? That’s why I became a teacher."

From Rock Drummer to Codigo Band

Music has taken him on an incredible journey. One of his most unforgettable moments? Performing in a big concert with fans while playing for Codigo, a well-known band in Ecuador. His love for music started the first time he saw a rock drummer in a music video—"I said, I wanna be that guy." Today, drums remain his favorite instrument.

Innovative Teaching: Peer-to-Peer Co-Teaching

Teaching music is about more than just notes and rhythm; it’s about mentorship and collaboration. One technique he’s recently introduced is peer-to-peer co-teaching, where a more advanced student is paired with a beginner. This approach not only strengthens skills but also builds confidence and community among students.

Words of Wisdom: Practice Beats Talent

If there’s one piece of advice he always shares with students, it’s this: "Practice beats talent." While natural ability is great, consistent practice is what truly makes a musician excel.

Jazz, Cartoons, and a Life Soundtrack

When it comes to music genres, jazz holds a special place in his heart—both in teaching and playing. And while students may see him as a serious musician, they might be surprised to learn that he loves cartoons! If he had to pick a theme song for his life, it would be "Immigrant Song" by Led Zeppelin—a track as powerful and energetic as his passion for music.

The Best Part of GAA? The People.

What excites him most about being part of GAA? "Getting to know so many different cultures." Music is a universal language, and at GAA, he gets to share it with students from around the world.

Dream Performances and Future Plans

If he could perform with any musician, he’d choose Buena Vista Social Club or Juan Luis Guerra. As for what’s next? "There will be a red carpet this year..." Stay tuned!

Whether on stage or in the classroom, his dedication to music and teaching continues to inspire. Thank you for sharing your talent and passion with the GAA community!
